Studying in Costa Rica

Lush, green, and warm with its own unique culture, Costa Rica has something for the adventurer and teacher in everyone.  Whatever your interests—eco-tourism, surfing, hiking, rafting, golf, or just relaxing on the white sands of an unspoiled beach—you’ll love studying and teaching in this tropical paradise.

INTESOL Costa Rica offers its TESOL/TEFL training program in Heredia. The programs include 150-hours of training and practical experience.  Both intensive and fun, the TESOL/TEFL program provides you with comprehensive training in a professional and supportive environment.

Following the TESOL/TEFL program you can apply for both volunteer and paid positions. Positions are available throughout Costa Rica, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.

Heredia

Known as the province of flowers, Heredia has long been a favourite destination for those coming to Costa Rica.

In Heredia, you get the best of all worlds: wonderful nightlife, a safe environment, a true cultural experience and tons of places to explore such as the Poas Volcano, the La Paz Waterfall Gardens, Barva Volcano, Café Britt tour, Inbio Park and many cultural festivals just to name a few. Compared to staying in the capital San Jose, Heredia is a much better option due to the concern over safety in San Jose.
What we like best about the layout of Costa Rica is that everything is just a short distance away from the Central Valley.

Below is a short list of popular destinations and how long it would take you to get there by bus:

Jaco Beach: 2 hours
Manuel Antonio National Park: 3 hours
Arenal Volcano: 3 hours
Monteverde National Park: 3.5 hours
Puerto Viejo: 4 hours
Tamarindo: 4.5 hours

Costa Rica Accommodation

We can assist you in finding housing for your month of training. Either option can be accommodated for independent living or shared spaces. You can choose to extend either stay past the original month if you care to.

Home Stays

All of our families are wonderful and welcoming people who are looking forward to housing you. Good hearty meals, a safe location and no curfews are guaranteed with each homestay!

We also know one of the main reasons many people come to Costa Rica is to either learn or perfect their Spanish. Our families are well aware of this and are excited to help you achieve your goals regarding the Spanish language.

Live with a Costa Rican family within minutes of the school and build relationships that will last a lifetime. Get to know the “tico” culture and practice your Spanish daily.

Hotel Monte Campana

Located approximately 5 km north of the school, this local hotel has a lot to offer for a great price. It is situated within some of the best views of the mountains in an area known for ATV riding, horseback riding, rappelling and canopy tours. This hotel offers a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, courts for tennis, basketball and football, abseiling, a ropes garden, a Canopy, a trail to a waterfall, a bar, and a restaurant.

TEFL job Opportunities in Costa Rica

For most Costa Ricans, speaking English is a way to get hired or move forward in their career.  As a major tourism destination as well active business sectors such as electronics and a large call center industry, English is a modern necessity for all Costa Ricans.  This means that there are almost limitless ESL jobs available in San Jose and the Pacific coastal areas.

There are more than 25 official language schools in San Jose itself, and then countless public and private schools, as well as NGOs that offer English classes. There are also excellent teaching opportunities in other cities especially along the Pacific coast.

CV/Resume Preparation

We ask you to bring your CV/resume to the program with you. Beginning in the first week of the course, we will dissect and re-write your CV to make sure it is effectively targeted and focused on teaching English internationally.  During the course we will advise you on how to update your CV/resume and make the necessary amendments to ensure your background is appealing to prospective employers. Often this can make a real difference, since the appropriate layout and structure of a CV/resume changes from country to country. By the end of the course you will have a first rate resume to present to potential employers.

Finding a Job In Costa Rica

We know that this is probably your #1 concern about moving to a new country. It was definitely mine. We can’t guarantee 100% that you will find a job, but we CAN guarantee that we WILL make the extra effort to find you the job you want.

Most TEFL schools have a list of phone numbers and emails, which they print off for their grads and say, “Here you go. Good luck.” We have strong relationships with many schools throughout Costa Rica, and we will find out which of them are hiring, and put you in contact with them.

Work for Us!

Plus our own ESL school, Idiomas Mundiales, has 3 locations, and we need teachers. We WANT our grads to work for us and will use the one month course to prepare you to work for us directly saving you the necessity to look elsewhere for a job.
