The City - Guanajuato, Mexico

INTESOL Mexico is located in one of the most picturesque cities in Mexico. The climate is spring-like year round with warm days and cool nights. There are showers during the summer months, however. Guanajuato is a small, safe, and friendly city located just a few hours north of Mexico City. The school
is situated on the most beautiful avenue in Guanajuato, lined with historic buildings, trees, parks and next to a reservoir. It is located in a peaceful and elegant neighborhood, "La Presa”, just 10 minutes from downtown.

Guanajuato is one of Mexico´s silver cities and 1988 UNESCO declared the city and surrounding mines a "World Heritage Site". Clean and beautifully preserved, the city is full of architectural treasures such as fine town houses, beautiful haciendas and romantic plazas. It is full of character with its many narrow winding alleyways, flowered balconies and system of underground tunnels. There is always something going on here: street parades, music in the plazas, religious fiestas, and cultural events throughout the year. There are many different museums and several theaters. The city is located in a valley and is surrounded by stunning mountains, which are accessible all year round.

The School

The Discovery Academy is the only language school in Guanajuato that is accredited by the Secretary of Education and we have been teaching English and Spanish since 1991. We have students of all ages and levels, and can provide plenty of observation and practice-teaching time. We have four classrooms and limit our class size to only 8 students. This provides what we believe to be the key to learning another language - personalized attention and plenty of opportunity to speak during class. Once you learn to speak with confidence, the grammar, reading and writing skills will fall into place.

We are happy to be joining the INTESOL program and will start our first 4-week course on September 1st. Your trainer will be Doreen Keepers who is from the US but has been living in Guanajuato since 1990 and has been teaching for over 20 years. We specialise in communicative activities and games in the classroom and provide a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

The philisophy of the Discovery Academy is based on a quote by Benjamin Franklin, "Tell me and I'll forget, show me and I may remember, but involve me and I'll learn." Apart from the excellent INTESOL training program, we will provide you with a generous amount of resources, visuals, games and hands-on activities that will help you become a dynamic and innovative teacher. Everyone at the Discovery school is looking forward to starting this INTESOL program and giving support to the future dynamic teachers that will be working with us.

Employment Opportunities

The school has an English Department, which teaches ESL/EFL to local Mexican students and we would encourage our TESOL graduates to consider Discovery Academy as their potential, first real-life ESL/EFL teaching experience! Students can then move on to teach at one of the many language schools across Mexico. There many opportunities for teaching English in Mexico. With its proximity to the U.S it is becoming more and more essential for citizens to speak English, most university students across the country are required to take English classes in order to graduate. The school can provide help and advice with finding a teaching position.

Mexico Accommodation

There are a number of housing options to choose from. Note that housing costs during the TESOL/TEFL program are separate from tuition. INTESOL Mexico is happy to help you arrange a family-stay, hostel, hotel, or private or shared house or apartment during your stay in Guanajuato. We have a wide variety of host families with costs as low as $150 per month. There are nice furnished apartments available between $200 and $400 per month. There is shared student housing that can be as low as $100 per month. The Discovery staff is happy to help you find accommodation to suit your needs in safe and comfortable environments. Most places are within walking distance and if you are venturing further afield bus and taxi services are readily available.
